The Open Web Rating system is, in its simplest form, a set of icons that creators can attribute to their works to show what age groups it is a part of. There is no approval process and anyone can use them to rate any content they like, such as video games, movies, music, YouTube videos, TV shows, and more.
It is the ONLY open source rating system on the internet, of course!
The Open Web Rating system was invented by me to solve a problem: I wanted to rate my YouTube videos so that kids and parents know what they're in store for, but the MPAA and ESRB both have a lengthy approval process that simply would not fit my workflow. And so the Open Web Rating system was born!
Yes, creators are asked to follow the proper guidelines but they are fully capable of putting any rating in anything they like. The OWR system works on the good faith of people and the hopes that they will do the right thing
